Our fostering system was created for two reasons. First, when animals have been at the shelter for a long time and just aren't getting adopted, sometimes they are placed into foster homes in order to get a "second chance" at finding a home. The foster parent takes an active role in finding the animal a home, while we continue to post them in our foster section on the website and continue to tell visitors at the shelter about them. We feel that having that one person who focuses just on them, they have a better chance of finding a permanent home.

Secondly, we also foster out animals with "special needs." These needs may be behavioral or physical, but there is SOMETHING going on with the animal that may keep it from being adopted as it is. So, we place it in a foster home for a "rehabilitation" period. This may consist of giving a mangy dog time to recover and grow it's hair back, or spending extra time with a timid or frightened dog to socialize it. After the animal has recovered, it can come back to the shelter and be placed up for adoption, having a much better chance of being adopted than it did before it was fostered.

If you are interested in an animal that is in foster care, please call the humane society  (662) 327-3107 to set up a time to meet the animal. A meeting should be able to be scheduled within a few days of your phone call.
