Delta's story

Hi!!!!
My name is Delta.. I’m a large black lab mixed with husky (at least that’s what they think, because one of my eyes is crystal blue). And, I guess you can say that I was saved twice also, just like Sierra
(read that story here).

The first time I was saved, a very nice woman found me wandering around. Her daughter worked at the Columbus Humane Shelter. But, instead of taking me straight to the shelter, her daughter kept me at her house for a little bit while they ran a found ad in the newspaper. I loved staying there…kissing and loving on her kids, playing with her K-9 children. No one ever called to claim me though. I was just about to be taken to the shelter to be put up for adoption when a young family volunteered to foster bigger dogs.

My new foster mom came to pick me up, and I slept in the back of her car the entire way home. When we arrived, I was greeted by their very excited dog, Storm. I wasn’t in the mood to play right then, but I patiently let Storm jump on me and chew on my head. I quickly adjusted to my new foster home, smiling and wagging my tail all day long. Over the next two weeks, I never left my new foster mom’s side…unless I was cuddling on the couch with Storm. Storm and I got along great. We sort of balanced each other out…she brought out my playful side, and I helped her calm down a little bit.

My foster mom tried to find me a new home, but no one seemed to want a big dog. Which was fine with me because I loved staying with them, and it was like Storm and I were meant to be sisters. I think my foster mom could sense that, too. Because after about 3 weeks, she told my foster dad that all she wanted for Christmas was me!!! I was so excited, and I hoped and prayed that he would say yes. It was about a week later when he finally told my foster mom that there was no way I was going to live anywhere else but with them!! They called the shelter and told them the good news, then set up a vet appointment for me to get all of my shots.

I was very good at the vet, wagging my tail the entire time, even when they were sticking me with all those needles. But, then we got some bad news. I had heartworm. I had been wondering why I felt so tired all of the time. My new mommy took me home and started to cry. I kissed her and tried to make her feel better, trying to tell her that I would be ok. We didn’t know how bad the heartworm was though, and that is what scared her. But, she was bound and determined to save me for the second time.

She quickly took me to another vet that could treat the heartworm. I had to get a chest x-ray and stay overnight at the vet. I knew my mommy would come back for me though. When the vet called her the next day and told her that I had about and 80% chance of making it through the treatment, she told them to go ahead and start the treatment.

It was a long two and half months.. I wasn’t allowed to exercise or play at all. I had to stay as calm and still as possible so that I wouldn’t get sick. Storm didn’t understand why she wasn’t allowed to play with me either. But, in the end it was all worth it. Last week I had my final heartworm test and it came back negative!! I feel so much better now. And, believe me, I’m putting at that pent up energy to good use. Storm and I run and play in our yard all day long now. And we love when we get to go on long walks with mom and dad. I’m very thankful for everyone at the Humane Society, and all the volunteers, and especially for my new mommy and daddy. I just hope and pray that all of the other dogs and cats at the shelter will find good forever homes too. Will you help please them???
