Charlie’s Story

As the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society approaches our busiest time of year, I feel that I MUST share a special story with you…This is a story of hope, we will call “Charlie’s Story”.

The first time I met Charlie I was at the shelter talking with the shelter vet and Jason, the shelter manager. Our office manager, Latonya came in distraught and wanted the three of us to look at what had just arrived from the Lowndes County Animal Control Officer. There, in a cage, was this tiny little puppy. I don’t recall a single hair on his malnourished, red and inflamed little body. From here forward, I will refer to him as “Charlie”.

You see, Charlie had been abandoned in an old house, left to die. Thank goodness he was picked up by Bobby, our County ACO. The four of us stood at his cage speechless; it was by far the saddest thing I had ever seen. Charlie was in a little ball, he heard us and managed to look up with this glimmer of hope in his bulging eyes. He somehow had enough hope to wag his tail, happy to see us. Charlie was then assessed by our veterinarian and his prognosis was grim and, the chance of Charlie being adopted appeared to be zero. The decision was made that the most humane thing to do for Charlie was the most emotionally disturbing thing that our shelter staff faces on a daily basis.

Charlie was given the dreaded shot to sedate him before being given him the shot to send him over the Rainbow Bridge. Somehow, though, he had the strength, despite the medication, to crawl into our shelter manager, Jason Nickles’, lap and look him in the eyes, with that spark of hope, again.

Please meet Charlie today! It was a rough, hard road for Charlie and his new owner, but all Charlie needed was a chance…Jason gave him that chance and with a lot of TLC, Charlie is a healthy, happy dog today!

If you, while reading Charlie’s story, love or have ever loved an animal, please help the CLHS give that same chance to so many other helpless animals. None of these animals deserve to die because there aren’t enough loving homes to give them a chance like Charlie was given.

If you can not help by adoption, there are so many other ways to make a difference in the life of one of our precious animals. A monthly financial contribution would go a long way to help “all the Charlies” we have.

As a community, we all have a responsibility to do all that we can to help these unfortunate animals. We need volunteers to help walk, bathe, and/or provide temporary homes for the many animals of the shelter. Volunteers are also needed to assist with mail outs, newsletters, and adoption drives. Become a Guardian Angel to help save one more life.

The shelter is always in need of the following:

Purina or Pedigree Dog/Puppy Food
Purina Cat/Kitten Food
Blankets/Towels
Bleach
Hand Sanitizer
Joy Dishwashing Liquid
Laundry Detergent
Leashes
Copy Paper

Please make the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society your charity for 2008.
 Help us, help them.
