Are you not in a position to adopt one our animals but still want to support the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society? No worries. There are PLENTY of ways that you can help animals and be a part of our cause. We are a non-profit organization, so our success depends on giving volunteers like yourself.  Here are some ways to help out:

Donate

CLHS is 100% nonprofit and dependent on community donations to cover our operating costs. We do not receive government funding or any funding from any national organizations (including the ASPCA and HSUS) for general operating purposes. Donations not only help us run our facility, but they help us provide the best possible care to each and every animal that comes through our doors. Find out more about donating to CLHS here.

Volunteer

There are so many volunteer opportunities for you here at CLHS. You could work one of the many adoption events that we have in the community, helping with the cats housed at PetSmart, Stuff the Bus supply drives at Wal Mart, and more. There's always a place for a willing individual. And the help is more than appreciated! Here is our Volunteer Application Form.  Submit this to our coordinator and you will be notified via email or text of all the volunteer opportunities through the year as they occur.  Get involved! We need you. Find out more about volunteering here.

Foster Care

Are you an animal lover but are not in a position to officially adopt a new pet? Well this could be the alternative for you. Foster! Occasionally we have animals that simply are too sick or too young to be in the shelter environment. They need a temporary place to stay. Our foster program helps pets spend time in a home. This is less stressful for them, they aren't exposed to germs, and get some much needed socialization being around people on a one-on-one basis. So it gives you some cuddle time with a fur-baby, but it also makes the animal more likely to be adopted when it does make it to the shelter. It's truly a valuable gift that you'd be giving – the gift of your time – and a win/win situation for all involved. Find out more about fostering here

Rummage Sale

Donate your gently used clothing, household items, toys and more to CLHS’s monthly rummage sales. 100% of the money raised from these sales go to support the shelter and our programs.
Find out more about how to donate to our rummage sales here.

Wish List

In addition to monetary donations, we always need supply donations as well. Providing for every animal in our care takes everything from food and beds to a full range of cleaning supplies.
You can see and download our current Wish List, which details many of the items and products necessary to our daily operation. We thank you in advance for your contribution.
See our complete wish list and find out more about donating supplies to CLHS here.

Reporting Abuse and Neglect

The Columbus Lowndes Humane Society encourages anyone who has seen abuse or neglect of an animal to contact the appropriate authorities.

Support Businesses That Support CLHS

There are many ways that businesses support CLHS. Please support those businesses that support our homeless pets. Click here for a full list of businesses that support CLHS.

The Columbus Lowndes Humane Society tries to make the adoption process open, easy and fun! Adoptions are first-come, first served. You must come to the shleter to complete your adoption and make sure you bring a photo ID, as it is required to complete adoption paperwork. We are open for pet adoptions Monday - Friday, from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Visit.

When you enter the front door, our cat room is to the right. You won't be able to miss all the whiskers and purring! Feel free to have a look around. If you're looking for a dog or puppy, just tell someone at the front desk and they can take you to where they are located. If you're looking for a specific size, age, or temperment of animal, please let our staff know that as well. Being around them every day, we get to know them pretty well and can point you towards the ones that will best fit your needs.

Play.

Once you've found an animal that you think will make a great addition to your home, we encourage you to spend some time with it. Pet. Play. Talk. Laugh. Interaction is key to seeing if you feel comfortable with the animal and it with you. We are also happy to set up a time for you to bring in any pets that you already own to see how they interact, so there are no surprises when you get home.  Adopting a pet is a big commitment. We want you to be sure that it is the right decision for you and your family before you leave CLHS.

Apply.

Once you're confident you've found a good match for your home, family and lifestyle, you simply fill out our Adoption Application. We will check your veterinarian reference, and if you live in an apartment, we will verify that you are allowed to have pets.  You will also need to provide a driver's license or photo ID along with the application.

Fees.

Adoption fees for dogs are $70 each. Adoption fees for cats are $30 each, or $45 with the FIV/FELV vaccination. These fees cover vaccination, worming, bordetella treatment, and spay/neuter of pet. Dogs ONLY are microchipped as well as part of their adoption fee.

Going home!

Once you are approved and have paid your adoption fee you're almost done! If the pet you selected is already spayed or neutered, you may take it home that same day.  However, if it still needs to be spayed or neutered, it will likely be two days before you can pick your new addition up and take him/her home. No animal will leave the shelter without being spayed or neutered.
